Spoken from the Heart, by Laura Bush

From Bookmarks Magazine

According to the Wall Street Journal, "Mrs. Bush's delicate rendering of the virtues and rhythms of mid-century Texas life sets this book far apart from the typical score-settling reminiscences of politicians or their spouses." Indeed, the former First Lady's autobiography is pleasantly--if unsurprisingly, given her famously serene demeanor--mostly free of political spitefulness. However, the critics unanimously declared that this sincere and self-assured memoir appears to be two books masquerading as one: a sentimental and richly detailed account of growing up in small-town America and a lackluster chronicle, "more travelogue and recitation" (Washington Post), of her years in the White House. Thoughtfully and elegantly written, Spoken From the Heart lovingly evokes Bush's beloved Texas even if it adds nothing new to readers' understanding of her husband's presidency.

Review

“Mrs. Bush’s delicate rendering . . . sets this book far apart from the typical score-settling reminiscences of politicians or their spouses. . . . Spoken from the Heart reveals Laura Bush to be a beautiful writer, a keen observer and a tender soul who drew on her roots to live a life in the public eye with compassion and grace.”—Wall Street Journal“This is Laura Bush, unplugged. . . . She comes across with a keener eye, a sharper tongue and a readier laugh than in interviews during the eight years while her husband was president.”—USA Today“A deeply felt, keenly observed account of her childhood and youth in Texas—an account that captures a time and place with exacting emotional precision and that demonstrates how Mrs. Bush’s lifelong love of books has imprinted her imagination.”—New York Times“Laura Bush writes as vividly of her upbringing in the bleak and unforgiving oil-patch towns of West Texas as Buzz Bissinger did in his classic Friday Night Lights.”—Bloomberg“Wide-ranging . . . candid . . . deeply personal. . . . A beautifully written book.”—Ann Curry, NBC’s “Today” Show“A real, moving, intimate story.”—People

I loved the insight in behind the scene happenings in the First Family.Who would have imagined that the President himself must pay for the food when they have friends/family in to dine. Oh and by the way, here's the lowdown on all the do's and don'ts before meeting heads of State or traveling to a foreign country that you need to know and rememberInsights like this that made this book so much more interesting. It truly was written "from the heart" and well worth the read.

In my mind's eye, there was one bright light in the eight years of the Bush administration and it was, indeed, Laura Bush!! This small-town Texas woman is exceptionally intelligent, caring, and, extremely private. Yet, in "Spoken From The Heart," she opens up to all of us who so admire her...and writes with the skill of an award-winning author.Ms. Bush's sweeping descriptive language made this reader feel as if I were traveling through her life in the Texas heat alongside of her. Her reliving of the horrible car accident, in which she was driving, that led to the death of a high school classmate, touched me deeply. It is easy to see that, at age 17, this disturbing incident transformed a carefree teenager into a mature woman with great faith and a remarkable ability to forgive and forget the foilables in others and to embrace all people who have moved through her very full life.I highly recommend this superb memoir to readers of all political leanings. You will not receive a treatise on politics within these pages, but a beautifully told story of a life. I am so glad I bought this book in hardback as I have added it to my "reread often" stack of my favorite books. "Spoken From the Heart" is a masterpiece which makes readers reflect on their own attitudes and lives.Simply put, this book is a home run and I hope to see Mrs. Bush back on the page again soon!! Bravo to one classy lady!!

Laura writes from her heart... as a woman, a wife, a mother, a teacher, leaving no doubt about her priorities in life. A refreshing and informative account of one woman's journey through trying and joyful moments of a varied and busy life in the public eye. It is always with the thread that life is just that... a journey. To be strong to face difficulties or challenges takes a discipline and a willingness to try and being true to oneself without exception. This is that lady... and I say "lady" with conviction. She is kind to others in this book, when others weren't kind to her or to her family. She credits those who have inspired her and disparages no one. A learned person who thrives on learning and is joyed to help promote that desire to learn in children and in others worldwide with lesser opportunity to learn. This book bespeaks a person who lives honestly and who inspires others to do the same. I would love to meet her some day and tell her that her book is exceptional and thank her in person. She has written herself into the pages with a quiet, subtle way and emerges as a woman of substance and a good heart. Reading her book, one learns things more important to the people of this country than any politician could hope to spout off about. We should all be so open and straightforward...and kind.

First Lady, Laura Bush, has written a wonderful book about her life. I especially enjoyed learning about her many international projects for helping women in other countries, and also, about her years as the First Lady when George W. Bush was president. I purchased this book because I wanted clarification on the war in Iraq and I got it in this well-formulated, well-thought-out biography.

A lovely gracious lady who has been up and down and up again in her lifetime, Laura Bush is plain spoken and direct in her analyses of her life and activities. A good book for those who do not know how the "other half" of America lives. Texas is a world apart from NYC and LA. It would be good for those coasters to learn what makes "real" America think and tick. But the book can be read as a true unadulterated life of a woman who was not born to wealth or privilege, except for family bonds, and rose to be first lady of the USA always keeping her own mind and thoughts. Someone you would maybe like to meet and chat with over coffee and pastry. Yes, folks, Texans can be literate too!!!! (review was written by an Philadelphian!)

Laura Bush's memoir is aptly titled. It is well written, easy to read and offers some insights into her life and work as the First Lady that we did not receive from media reports, or even from seeing her on many talk shows throughout her eight years in the White House. She does not delve deeply into the controversies -- the accident while she was a novice driver that took the life of her friend, her daughters' flouting Texas drinking laws, her husband's years of drinking too much and what that must have meant to a young wife and mother. However, she does not avoid those subjects. She just avoids mining the depths of her feelings about them. Most touching to me was her account of her work to try to restore education and some personal freedom to the women of Afghanistan after the Taliban was routed from their government. Mrs. Bush's book is worth the time to read it. It will go fast.

Took time to get into the book because I am used to a fast pace in life and in the material I choose to read. The pace of her life at the beginning was relaxed. I was touched by the fact that she missed having siblings as friends. It hurt that she was an only child because her mother just couldn't carry to term. She definitely bloomed into a great First Lady and was involved in the most threatening countries as she visited women all over the world. I have developed great respect for her through my exposure, in this book, to who she is. She shows honesty and integrity and not pretensiousness. I am glad I read it and have given it on to a friend."I like it" as you verbally describe four star status doesn't raccurately describe how I rate this. I felt enriched by the experience of getting a glimpse at this woman, Laura Bush.
