Review
. . . Offer[s] a multidimensional exploration of New York City's nine major bridges. . . Each of these classic bridges has its own story, and the book's paintings show the majesty and artistry, while the essays fill in the fascinating details of its social, cultural, economic, political and environmental history. (―The Artist's Life)“Many books have been written about the bridges of New York, as evidenced by the volumes cited in this work. Yet, the idea of framing descriptive text and a highly personalized story around critically acclaimed works of fine art is a unique approach. Through the visual interpretation of Antonio Masi, the bridges take on different personae according to mood, physicality, vantage point, and time of day. Joan Marans Dim’s essays are a translation of the process for the reader and viewer and bring a contextual richness to viewing the works that might otherwise be missing." (―Nancy Murphy Cricco University Archivist, New York University)Antonio Masi is quite simply an astonishing painter. His large-scale watercolor paintings have a grandeur to them that is most appropriate to his subject of the awe-inspiring New York City bridges he loves to portray. He is able to capture changing weather, the feel of endless traffic, and the atmosphere of the vibrant and bustling city these engineering marvels serve, but most of all Antonio portrays their majesty and grace. Anyone who loves the experience that is New York will want to own and absorb this book―these are images that are timeless. (―Claudia Seymour President, Salmagundi)Poetic and enlightening, New York’s Golden Age of Bridges pairs Antonio Masi’s masterful watercolors with Joan Marans Dim’s entertaining essays. Masi makes his own contribution to the rich artistic heritage celebrating the city’s great landmarks. His command of watercolor conveys both the mighty weight and the evocative delicacy of New York’s soaring spans, while Dims’ commentary offers insights into the artist’s life-long engagement with the subject, his aims and influences. Their stirring collaboration will take its place on the bookshelves of New York devotees. (―Pamela N. Koob Curator, Permanent Collection, The Art Students League of New York)“New York’s Golden Age of Bridges†uses paintings by Antonio Masi and essays by Joan Marans Dim to span the gaps in the skyline by focusing on the physical connections that helped create Greater New York." (―The New York Times)For most of us bridges are massive immovable structures of steel, cement and cables; marvels of engineering that we don’t understand. We take them for granted as they transport us from one place to another. As seen through the eyes of Antonio Masi and portrayed in his powerful paintings bridges become beautiful, and as ethereal as medieval cathedrals. His paintings, like the bridges, also take us from one place to another. Antonio’s place is a place where his artistic vision, his magical light and movement let us understand his personal connection to these bridges and marvel at the beauty he presents for our enjoyment. (―Jim McFarlane President, American Watercolor Society)

This book is a treasure of beautiful water color paintings by Antonio Masi and fascinating essays by Joan Marans Dim. I found the combination of these paintings and essays a perfect way to inform a reader about these wonderful structures that I had only admired as a visitor to NYC. Now I'm anxious to return and revisit these magnificent bridges. Joan Dim writes with a fine blend of the historian and the artistic writer admiring the bridges themselves, Masi's renderings of them and the amazing contributions of the architects, engineers and others that enabled them to be built. She discusses the courage of designers and construction workers, the foresight of the politicians and the people of the city themselves who all contributed to each of the 9 bridges construction and remodeling and repairing when needed.I plan to order more copies of this book for presents for friends that love NYC and appreciate lovely art and skillful, compelling writing.
New York's Golden Age of Bridges by Antonio Masi and Joan Marans Dim is a treasure for those who love architecture and history. The massive structures are angular and utilitarian but also fluid and evanescent in Masi's paintings, which offer perspective and detail usually found in oil rather than watercolors used by the artist. Dim deftly combines the story of each bridge's construction with insight into Masi's approach to his subjects. I spent hours admiring and reading these pages and look forward to perusing them again.
Lovely book. Beautiful photos of paintings of all of the bridges.
brand new condition. Love it.
New York's Golden Age of Bridges is a book for every New Yorker, bridge enthusiast, artist, architect, engineer, city planner and those interested in history. Antonio Masi's water-color paintings are epic. Joan Marans Dim's history is enthralling and entertainingly explains how nine long-span bridges have defined New York City and, eventually, a nation. This volume is so much more than a coffee table book. What a great present! And so reasonably priced for the beauty and knowledge within!
New York's Golden Age of BridgesNew York's Golden Age of Bridges, with its evanescent paintings and provocative narratives, reveals to the reader the many kinds of issues and forces that produced the extraordinary nine "Golden-Age" bridges of New York City. Both Antonio Masi's artistry and Joan Marans Dim's essays illuminate the complex connections these bridges foster and their resulting impact not only on the city but also on its larger surround.New York's Golden Age of Bridges brings alive the complex and enthralling enterprise of envisioning, building and living with bridges. It belongs in the homes of New Yorkers, young and old, who love art, history and NYC.
Beautiful, sensitive, sensual. Masi is a master at portraying not only the skeletal bones and connective tissue of the bridges, but also the heart, soul, and spirit.
The artist has rendered the bridges of New York in lovely colors with an impressionistic style. I recently visited New York, took the Circle Line Ferry and realized how beautiful these bridges really are up close. The artist captures their beauty.
