I gave it 5 stars because Kate Middleton had great commentary mixed in with the various cities and site along the river, You got a sense that she loved the river and all it stood for in history of people and activity.

If you plan to travel the picturesque Great River Road through western Wisconsin, this book should be an essential part of your travel planning. It provides information on nearly every town or city along the way. Each chapter is broken into the towns included in that chapter. The book describes attractions, parks, historic sites, recreatioinal places and more. It is easily understood and gives the traveller some insight to the location next on their journey. It also provides detailed histories of certain cities or regions that gives further details that lend perspective to one's journey.The book is organized geographically north to south. Volume One covers St. Paul, Minnesota to Dubuque, Iowa or about 250 miles of the Great River Road. The river road follows the Mississippi River that includes Lake Pepin, Wabasha and Winona on the Minnesota side and Pepin, La Crosse, Prairie du Chein on the Wisconsin side. This route is very scenic and will take several hours to see all there is to do.If the book has one drawback it is the lack of color maps and photos, but this does not detract from the book's overall effectiveness. It is easily read and you can prepare for the next town as you leave the place you are currently at. But don't just go town to town as there are many other stopos along the way.So pack the car, pack a lunch (or buy lunch along the way), and bring this book. Your journey awaits.
This books adds great travel tips and interest to my drive along the Mississippi. The author does a nice job of describing the areas and adds to the adventure of road travel.
