I enjoy Sherri's easy to read writing. The pictures in the book are terrific. Her projects are fun and there are plenty of ideas to last for some time. I thought it was worth the purchase to just see the pictures of her studio alone!
This was exactly what I was looking for in resin jewelry instruction. There are fabulous pictures and instructions and the projects are just sophisticated enough yet simple enough that I know I will use this book again and again.
This is a pretty good book. I use it for inspiration and added it to my collection.
Great book, clear examples, beautiful work! It gave me lots of ideas to explore and try out. I recommend any of Sherri Haab's books
I have not made anything from this book yet however I know this book will inspire me to use some of the ideas in it. I can't wait.
I’ve got to say it: The subtitle, ‘Techniques and Designs from the Artist’s Studio’ is more of a reference book to me because half of the book and projects don’t interest me, but I appreciate the author’s work and the photography.This 2009 soft-cover book has 160 semi-glossy pages, with at least 1 expertly-staged color photo per page.Note: There is a strange page numbering system used in this book: only every-other page is numbered, and the numbers are found only in the right margins of the right-hand-side pages, rotated 90 degrees inward, so that the number aligns with the spine of the book (vertically) – instead of the page tops or bottoms, which are horizontal. Every time I wanted to see a page number, I had to rotate it or my head and for the left pages, I had to subtract 1 number from the number printed on the right. I have wasted a lot of time trying to do a simple task: find a page number and read it. A good editor could have solved this problem before the book was published.The book begins with the Introduction and then following that, there are 7 sections: 1. In the Studio. 2. Jewelry-Making Techniques, 3. Memories, 4. Seasons, 5. Collections, 6. Blast from the Past, and 7. Hobbies.At the end, there is: Contributors, Resources, and Index, but no Bibliography, which is a standard book section. The Bibliography is important especially for beginners who need to know about good: magazines, books, web sites, videos, films, etc. in order to earn more about the topic of this book.My favorite parts of this book are: Pp, 96-97: Briolette Stone Earrings and Bead Accents; Pp. 98-99: Wrapped Wire Briolette Bead Earrings; Pp. 111-113: Resin Heart Pendants; Pp. 120-125: Spool Knit Wire Bracelet; and Pp. 127-129: Viking Knit Wire Bracelet.The author is Sherri Haab, and the publisher is Watson-Guptill Publications, NYC.Because this book does have some very interesting projects, while 1/2 of the book is just OK, it should be on the library shelves of serious jewelry-makers, especially those who work in wire.
I ordered this book to review out of curiosity about jewelry making. I sew, bake, knit, crochet (and more), but I've never tried my hand at jewelry making. When I saw this book with its tasteful cover, I thought that it might be a good introduction to some basic jewelry making that would give me an idea if this was a hobby I might like to pursue. I was right!This book is well organized, includes lovely photos, and can give a new-comer to this art a good sense of materials and skills needed. While my review copy was in black and white (as noted by other reviewers), the images were clear and well-composed. I know that in its color version this book will be aesthetically pleasing read. The organization cannot be over-looked; the book is divided into themed sections such as "Memories" and "Seasons." Each section is further subdivided into individual projects, with the projects introducing a variety of techniques. General techniques are further outlined at the beginning of the book with projects referencing the pages needed for more detailed instruction, making this an easy book to navigate. As mentioned by other reviewers, the step-by-step directions look very accessible and are accompanied by plentiful photographs to work your through each project. This book could be used as inspiration for an experienced jewelry maker, or as an excellent primer by a complete novice (like me).As a 30-something west-coaster, I found many of her projects very appealing, and could see myself gifting and wearing many of the pieces described in this book. In general, I would highly recommend this book for the active crafter who would like to learn about jewelry-making or expand their repertoire.
