This book must have been aimed at my skill level.My background is Servlets, JSPs, Struts, JSF and SpringMVC, i.e. Java.This book let me make the transition really fast and stand up a medium size web site in a couple of weeks.If you know MVC, but not ASP.NET, it is ideal.Because I coded and elaborated the design / code as I read, I feel that the architecture of my ASP.NET site is better than anything I have done in Java. This is because the book instils best practices by example.Although it focused a bit too much on WebForms for me, it really let me realize how much MVC is modelled after SpringMVC.I did need a more advanced book for Razor tags, but it got me up to speed really fast.I used Pro ASP.Net MVC 5 by Freeman for Razor, but that I hardly opened.
I'm just learning MVC and bought this along with Pro ASP.NET MVC 3 Framework / Apress. This book has a lot of good insight & in-depth info about the MVC platform. The author clearly has a deep understanding of MVC and provides reasons for doing / not doing different things. I have recommended this book to others. I would like to have an update to include MVC 4. As others have said, it is not a "start from scratch" book and does not cover every aspect of building an MVC app from scratch, and the author states as much in the book itself. But it seemed very helpful to me and I hadn't had much exposure at all (just a Pluralsight MVC 3 tutorial).
This was a great buy for me.
It was informative, and my husband has used it for several projects. He says it was well worth the money.
Dino Esposito goes into much more detail and does not rehash "MusicStore" that is overused in John Galloways book.
Not an intro book - but a deep dive for professional developers. I have both the second and third editions and use them frequently when I have a particular area I need a better understanding of.Also, the book comes with 47 samples (several for each chapter) that you can run and work with. These are not your typical Hello World samples, but samples which show how things are done in production apps. Note that these are barely mentioned in the text, so you need to break them and work with them to find what you are looking for. I think these samples are missed by many of the reviewers here. So when I read a chapter, I first open up the samples for that chapter, run them, and then read the material for it.
I am enjoying the book so far and read 4 chapters so far. there are some good examples and discussions about different patterns MVC/MVP/MVVM and when to use which one. It is not a step by step book if that's what you are looking for but it's definitely a good ride if you want to go back in history and see how we evolved from asp-> webforms->mvc and how IIS and other settings have evolved to make this happen.I wanted to download the code and followed the link in book which took me to [...] and could not find a place to download code. could anyone help me with this? I will update my review once I have read the whole book.
This book as it has written on its side is for professionals only, so do not expect a hand holding tutorial that builds on the last chapter like the excellent Microsoft step by step series. The chapters are designed to briefly explain features of asp.net mvc while maintaining a high level perspective of how things work in conjuction. The only issue I had with the book is that it lacks fully functional solutions to explore.
