Well written and very practical to have in your shirt pocket or your gig case. It explains in a very concise manner from all the different shades on nuances to most of the great composers. Even though you might think you know everything about music, you'll always find something new and taken by surprise by some information you didn't know. Well worth the prize.
It was a gift for a musical high school student. He seemed very happy to receive the book. I have a degree in choral music and just scanning through the entries it seemed to cover a lot for the high school student.
Plenty of information here. Well organized, but, being a pocket edition, it's, well, a pocket edition, and info is a bit cramped. Great for on the road.Would recommend, but would purchase a full-size format next time.
A tiny treasure in a tiny pocket
This little book is helpful and has lots of information. I have looked up a few musical terms which were not listed, such as L'istesso Tempo. Definitions are concise.
Great little paperback that is easy to find what you are looking for quickly. It is very convenient. I would highly recommend it!
Not only does Hal Leonard's Pocket Music Dictionary have definitions of musical terms, it has a biographical listing of composers from ancient to modern times; and has a valuable time line of major composers. It also has reference charts of various musical symbols and other items. I am glad that I purchased it.
After a few decades of not playing music, I'm back ina community band. Thought I should geta music dictionaryto use. I play bass clarinet, so I noted that they had the bassclarinet as a bass clef instrument - NOT. They were also in error about eht range of theinstrument -- what they had was too small a range for even a Selmer student levelhorn. The definitions would get an F from my high school music teacher. For example,the define a valve instrument as "an instrument with valves". Remember being told do not define a word using the word(s) yuoui are defining. If you look up the definition of a symphonic band, they give concert band. Then when you go to concert band the definition is "A band that plays concert-style pieces". No mention of the instrumentation, etc. In the composers listing they have contemporary ones, e.g. Hank Williams Jr. Also some focus on guitars. The biggest omission is that where they define tempo words, e.g. andante, allegro they do not given ANY information about beats per minute, which of course would be very helpful and in fact part of a good definition. What shall I do with this book? Give it to an middle school student as it will ad something to their knowledge. As for myself, I will buy some other better music dictionary. Oh, check out the back cover of the image on the site. Back cover has the price as $4.95; yet is selling for $7.95.
