I never owned the original edition but I had heard about it for years. When I saw a 20th anniversary edition was coming I was very interested.Even though I was put off by the price initially, after finishing it (it took 3 months) i feel the price is justified because of all the care and research put into it. I especially love the illustrations of iconic Madonna photos throughout.My only complaints-- and they are small ones:*I feel it should've been hardback. The covers and spine are quite thin for such a thick heavy book (and it is very heavy and cumbersome, but that is unavoidable).*It is full of typographical and grammatical errors. A few factual errors as well.*There are too many pictures from the MDNA Tour.But these are minor quibbles. It is a very impressive volume and I'm happy to own it. Very much worth the price.
Matthew Rettenmund has done it again with this massive informative tome that I am sure Madonna herself would approve, I loved the original EM that he released in 1995, Now EM20 is up to date and has color photos and fan spotlights from Kickstarter contributors and beautiful Madonna art throughout, It is an A to Z on anything and everything you ever wanted to know about her this is your one stop Madonna shop, there are a few errors but that is forgivable when you are writing about a woman of her caliber she has kept all of the world on the edge of it's seat for 33 years! Madonna's art is unending, a lot of ground to cover so Matt you done well! Your passion for Madonna shows in your work! Thank you for updating and making a already good but even better. I am still reading this incredible book it has 581 pages nearly 600 pages. Encyclopedia Madonnica 20 is a brilliant Masterpiece and should be on any Madonna fan's bookshelf.
This book is a must for all Madonna fans. This is like the bible of Madonna information dating back to her childhood up until recently. I'm a big Madonna fan so this book was a must for me. I had the original from 1995, but the is updated, and has so much more information than ever before. Don't be intimidated by the price, believe me it's worth every penny and I also believe it will eventually become a collectors' item. Chock full of everything you want to know about Madonna, her life and even some new info. that I didn't even know as a fan of over thirty years. This book is thick and weighty. As I stated earlier, perfect for the Madonna fan, as a birthday, holiday etc. present and for yourself.
It's amazeballs. So worth it.Only Qualms: I get that it takes lots of money to acquire the rights to utilize certain images for publication & this greatly affects EM20. Several of the album & singles covers are miniscule. The beautiful images adorning the iconic long-players such as 'Erotica' & 'Confessions on a Dance Floor' deserve to be amplified accordingly as well! There are other examples of this but it's all really minute.The quality of the book could use an upgrade. The cover is too thin for a book this large in size & subject matter grandeur, heheh. I think in the future a hardcover would suffice! Also the printing on some of the pages is of bad quality, often accompanied by streaks of fading color (low on the toner?)Also wish the were more visuals from her amazing photographic collaborators (both Stevens ((Meisel & Klein)), Mert & Marcus, Mondino, etc.. There's a grip of candid 80s pics featured in the book which is pretty chill.Other than that, it an amazing addition to your Madonna memorabilia or your music geek book collection.
An updated book (version 2) that's replete with everything important about Madonna from her career to personal life up to 2015. Is as thick as a phone book and well worth the $65 price tag. No book is as detailed or complete as this one!
It was great to see an update to the book I cherished so much in the 90's. I can't believe how big it is! I thought the price was steep, but when I actually received it, I understand why. Love it! The Bible of everything Madonna.
This is the best Madonna book ever written. I am a huge Madonna fan and I've literally read hundreds of books. It's more than safe to say that there a lot of books are good, some are bad and this one is the ultimate best! It's a must for fans and a must for people who just want to know the facts.
For all you ride or die Madonna admirers /fans /those that believe in artistic expression this book is for you. So much Madonna information that I was surprised to learn and see. Great book to invest in for those that love the Material Girl.
