I bought two copies and did not notice this until months after purchase. My complaint is with the book's printing. It didn't occur to me that I should do a quality check when it arrived. The pages are misaligned, cutting off words -- see photos. I noticed another person had a section of their book missing! Check your book when you receive it, obviously books don't have a quality check before being sent out.
My fourth-edition Scrabble dictionary is a hardback book, easy to read, with binding that’s sewn, rather than glued, so the pages lie open without having to be held down. By contrast, this paperback fifth edition has tiny print that’s hard for the visually impaired to read. When you open it, it doesn’t lie flat but has to be held open.In back, this book lists Q words not followed by U, 2- to 7-letter words with no AEIOU vowels, and 2- to 6-letter words containing J, Q, X, or Z. But there are no lists showing which words are new to the fifth edition. Those are available online, in The Cheat Sheet, adapted from “Scrabble Workbook,†by Mike Baron.
You pretty much have to use this very dictionary to check officially acceptable words, as many of them are not in Merriam-Webster, or at least not in my older M-W. We also print out the list of official two-letter words and allow players to see them during play, as perhaps half of them are words even I as a published PhD have never seen in my life. When have you ever heard someone say "za" to mean "pizza?" (Spell check did not like "za.") Because some players that you might run into have memorized these strange and rare words, it is in my opinion only fair to have this list visible.As for the dictionary, you simply must have it available to play scrabble, as the existing dictionaries you have at home do not have many of the "official" words in them.
This book is a complete joke. I play this game with my mother every morning, and we find all kinds of words that are not in this version.E.G, The word *zen*. That word has probably been around before the Ming Dynasty.*PEZ* Yeah it's candy and it's probably an acronym, but the way I see it, if you can use it in the weakly crossword puzzle paper, you can use it in a board game.I could go on, but that's just the time of the ice berg. Other words use for medical terms, technical terms, legal terms, political terms and so on were not in there.So to recap, 5 K new words, well WTH were they?!
I was upset to find that when I opened my dictionary some pages were cut incorrectly so that parts of some words were missing and other pages the words were hidden to the centre in the binding of the book. For me it makes no sense to return it because I live in The Caribbean and it would be more costly than getting a new one. I'm just really disappointed and hope to get some form of redress.
First let me say I gave this as a gift with Gardening Scrabble and I am still be thanked for it even though I have given this gift almost 2 months ago. I am not a scrabble player but I thought it would be a cute idea to give as a gift. I did not know how much of a success this little book would be. The person I gave it to is an avid scrabble player and even host tournaments at her home. She was almost bought to tears over this very reasonably priced booked. I would highly recommend this book along with a special edition scrabble which can also be purchased through Amazon.
We had large print version of the prior edition, and have enjoyed it, but it is a heavy book to pass across the table when your enemy (aka wife) needs to find an obscure word that fits her mix of five vowels, a "Z" and a "K". This new edition has 5,000 more words, and I feared the print might be too small for old people like us, but it is actually quite readable and lightweight in the normal paperback version, and well worth the money. And by the way, if you have never invested in the double-size Scrabble deluxe version with 200 letters, please get a set. It takes up a little more room when playing, and is a little more trouble to put back in concise and quick storage, but it is well worth it. With that set you can be 100 points down with only about ten letters to play and steal a victory.
THIS 5TH EDITION IS AN ABSOLUTE "MUST HAVE" FOR ANYONE WHO PLAYS SCRABBLE TODAY. WE DIDN'T PLAY FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS AND DECIDED TO BUY A DELUXE EDITION AND START PLAYING AGAIN AFTER I RETIRED. I WAS SURPRISED THAT OUR RATHER BEAT UP OLD SCRABBLE DICTIONARY WAS THE FIRST EDITION!!! LOVE THE NEW DICTIONARY.
