Finding nutritional data for dogs can be a difficult business--and while much of the information in Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog is presented by anecdote, there's still plenty of worthwhile reading here. Aimed at dog owners that are already fairly committed to nonallopathic forms of health care for their pets, much of the book is based around author Wendy Volhard's Natural Diet. The Natural Diet is fairly labor intensive, as Volhard is the first to admit, but she provides page after page of testimonials that credit the diet with improved temperaments, better activity levels, and exemplary physical health. Each ingredient in this diet is discussed in depth, so owners not ready to take the step of providing a complete diet from scratch can still learn about potentially valuable supplements, as well as what ingredients to look for in a commercial diet. Beyond the dietary information provided, there are several chapters that give solid explanations of different types of health care available, including homeopathy, kinesiology, and the five-element theory. For those who still prefer allopathic care for their dogs, the chapters that cover standard lab tests are extremely useful, finally giving a layman's guide for urinalysis, blood serum, liver function, and thyroid testing. A glossary defines various terms such as acidosis and hepatic, and each description is easily understandable, even by those with no medical background whatsoever. For puppy owners, the chapter discussing vaccinations is informative--Volhard questions the necessity of many we take for granted, and suggests several methods for lowering the required number for your pup. Ultimately, the majority of this book is geared toward folks who are already committed to providing their pooches with alternative health care and homemade food. No matter how interesting the dietary concepts presented here, if you aren't already a true believer it's not likely that Volhard's anecdotes will provide you with enough statistical proof to completely overhaul your dog's way of life. --Jill Lightner

I have a little dog, from puppy hood she had issues all kinds of issues, skin, ears, bladder, and the list goes on and on. I had a vet they would give my dog meds things would clear up and we were back to square one. The things really started to o down hill and now my little dog has kidney problems, more meds and Science diet K/D. We seemed to be at the vet weekly, I switched vets still same problems still the same answers. When my little dog turned 5 I was told she was going to die before the year was up, she was having major organ failure her liver was shutting down. I was told about some meds that would help and "maybe" prolong her life but they would make her deaf (side effect). Needless to say I was devastated I still felt in my heart something here was wrong so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I went to the book store and really found nothing, right next to the book store is PetSmart I thought what the hell let me look. I found this book in the clearance section for 99 cents, ok lets just buy it maybe it can point me in another direction this was on a Sunday. Monday husband left for work and I sat down to read this book and let me just tell you the education I received that day is one I will never forget. First part talks about shots, ok we are told we have to have them, we are told that its in out animals best interest to have them, we give them because we want the best for our furry family members, but I know from personal experience that shots are dangerous they gave my little dog her puppy shots all at one time and she nearly died, so we had to give them one at a time a week apart. So they are dangerous, but what other choices do you have? Well this book will tell you what choices you have that I never knew existed. My little dog routinely had blood work done, I am not a vet I have no idea what I am reading or what it really means, this book will tell you that and tell you what it means and how to fix it if the counts are not where they need to be. The next part I will never forget as long as I live is dog food, I read and read first I cold not even believe what I was reading then it talks about ingredients, we have all done it we look at the label but what does all that stuff mean? Well this book not only talks about dog food it talk about ingredients and what they are. After reading this book and actually checking up on what I read in other places I realized in the 5 years I had my little dog I have been tying to kill her by trying to keep her healthy. In the back of this book they have resources and I used them. This was back about 11 years ago since that time I have learned so much more some of it will make you hair stand up on end some of it should be illegal. I will tell you this This book saved my little dogs life, she is still right here next to me as I type this, my little dog is now 16 she is happy and very healthy as a matter of fact she never has to go to the vet for a problem we just go to make sure everything is right where it should be.I am not saying that this book will do the same for you I am saying this book is a window into a dog and companies who make stuff for our dogs. I was shocked to see how misleading labels are even vets, for some vets its a money thing other vets are just doing what they may have learned. The important part here is you need a vet who will work WITH you. A vet who does not think their way is the only way. I did not find that with the vet who told me my little dog was going to die, she told me I was an unfit animal owner. This book gave me the confidence to try something new the resources were great, they held my hand along the way, I educated myself more and more then found others who are as I am trying to make the best life possible for our furry family members and I found a vet that worked WITH me.I still have this book, I have given it to others who were lost and did not know what to do like I once was. When I read this book I read it with the attitude that my little dog is dying and I have nothing more to loose. I listened to my heart I knew that something was wrong I kept telling them something was wrong,I was told that its this or that but nothing FIXED the problem, they only put a band aid on it and charged me 200.00 dollars.Buy the book read, then you can check up on what you read and actually confirm it. I made changes to my little dogs life and I have no looked back once, I only wish I knew this before I got her. In the picture is my little dog who is now 16 my learning gave me 11 years and counting.
Wish I still had or could find first addition. It has been my dog bible since the 1980’s. Everything in the original still holds true today.
Way too many grains for my taste in this book. I don't feed my animals grains, but this book basically pushes the low energy ones such as oats. Other than that I found much of the information in this book available on the web for free. I"m happy to have the book for reference in my library, but it will not be my first book to go to for Holistic advice. For the price I paid it was a good buy.
I have constantly referred to Wendy's book since 2001, when I put my 3 Shelties on the Natural Diet. Over the years, I have bought many copies of this book giving them to my puppy buyers and dog friends alike. I have worn out several of the paperback versions, so this is great to have an indestructible copy on my kindle to refer to. My only wish is that the index had links back to the chapters or page numbers for easier scanning when looking up specific issues. Otherwise, I am delighted to have this book on my kindle.
I have used this diet for years, with great results. The book is packed with supporting info for many conditions. I have it in my kindle so when I travel it is handy if something comes up.
This is excellent. Thanks for making it available for those of us who have experienced dreadful things with flea and tick and heartworm preparations that crippled, mentally affected and ruined two of our six small dogs, unnecessary vaccinations and dependence on drugs for cures.Thank you!Nancy and John Morse
Good intro into holistic dog care for me. Great reference, but I'm not sure I agree 100% with everything in the book. Use your good judgement along with other sources to make the best dog care program for you and your dogs.
Very helpful book! Lots of new information, for me. Can help to save our pets.
