Tim Keller does a great job of answering some of the age old questions and objections regarding Christianity. He definitely puts it in a context that the average person today would understand. I think it will especially appeal to younger people. I am age 60 and I liked it. I think his church is primarily comprised of younger, smart, urban dwellers and he seems to really have a gift for speaking to them. He makes a very persuasive, logical case for Christianity. Perhaps the best point he makes is that even supposed non-faith, agnostic, or atheist positions are in fact based on faith. For instance, the person who says four blind people approaching an elephant might describe an elephant as being four different things depending on whether they grabbed the trunk, the tail, a leg, or an ear; is in a sense saying, “I am the one person who sees clearly. I really know what the elephant looks like.†That same person might also say, “I know the truth and the truth is that all roads/faiths/religions lead to God.†That person is in fact making a faith statement. It just doesn’t appear to be one. No living person can by mere reason or scientific evidence establish the fact that in fact all the world’s religions lead to the same place hereafter. If you are going to look down on people of faith, please have the honesty to admit that you are a person of faith as well. If you’re an unbeliever in Christianity, your faith assumes that there is no God. My faith assumes that there is. My belief though is not an intellectually inferior position to yours.
there are more questions than answers here. this assumes the person leading a group study will be pretty sharp and a solid believer. this isn't for people questioning, it's for people who aren't questioning but need to be aware others are.
I'm a big fan of Tim Keller's work and this book/DVD/guide is excellent. I'm only withholding a final star because I felt like many of his answers (especially on the DVD) were a little too "conciliatory" and avoided the inherent hard & fast lines in scripture. Nonetheless, in discussions with people of different faiths -- including secularism/science, which Dr. Keller repeatedly describes as a hypocritical religion unto itself -- it is wise to walk a fine line between friendliness and combativeness.
Insightful discussion of the timeless truths of God's Word in relationship to modern secular thinking and questions. Excellent resource for helping the non-believer have a better grasp of common misconceptions of Christian principles.
The study guide for The Reason for God is designed to work with the DVD, helping small groups interact about the information they watched on the DVD. Many Christians don't know how to talk to non-Christians. Tim Keller is doing just that, and he shows his audience how to have a conversation with those why don't believe as you do, and how not to make it about trying to get them to agree with you. Learning how to listen to others has become sort of a lost art.
Lots of good, practical sense in this little book. But I thought it was sort of clumsy in terms of how certain parts related to things unavailable to someone who purchased the book only. Apparently this was something of a guide that depended on other media to be fully successful as a teaching tool. Not entirely sure about that. Overall, I enjoyed it.
Awesome study and study guide. Tim Keller has a great way of speaking on a normal people level while also sounding very intelligent. Great study for adults or college aged students.
One of the best books I have ever read other than the Bible and Mere Christianity. Great book to help you reach out to those asking hard questions about God and faith.
