If you want to look at the Apocrypha through the lens of quirky humor and pop culture references, you've come to the right place.Dante finds a way to break down these hidden extra biblical books in a fun and engaging fashion. I seriously can't think about Ecclesiasticus now without drawing parallels to Yoda! The best part for me is the historical nuggets he peppers throughout the book. I've always enjoyed studying history and I appreciate the deep dive he makes to put each book into context. A perfect example is his look into Zoroastrianism and how their beliefs concerning the dead were at odds with Jewish burial practices and how this influenced the narrative in the Book of Tobit. This in-depth, thought-provoking, and flat-out funny look at the Apocrypha offers everything you could ask for in this type of book.

Being a lover of and student of the Protestant Bible my whole life, I've been curious about the Apocrypha, but never taken the time to actually read any of it. This book is the perfect overview and introduction to each of the apocryphal books. Fun and easy to read and informative, too!Published by Stockade Amusement and written by Dante Stack, the book was written with the intent to help the reader understand these books, not to defend or attack them. However, after each summary, Dante gives some historical background and commentary with a rating system on Historicity, Readability, Conformity to Orthodoxy, Fruitlity and Overall Impression. Very helpful and informative and FUN!My favorite thing about this book is Dante's suggestion that the Apocrypha is filled with stories that Jesus knew about. And if that is so, then reading the Apocrypha (or about the Apocrypha) can be useful in knowing just a little bit more about the culture of the era in which Jesus lived. And that may bring me just a tiny bit deeper in my relationship with Him.PLUS, I earned a gold star for reading this book!

I went into this book not sure what to expect but was very pleased. The author gives a fantastic insight into the extra books of the Bible, tales most don't know about. Not only did I learn a lot along the way, I was also quite entertained!

One thing you're going to want to remember going into this: this book is called "Fun with the Apocrypha," not "Straight-Laced with the Apocrypha."The average theologian has probably been introduced to more formally and serious toned works analyzing the Bible, trying to provide answers to serious questions by means of their own interpretations of the books that usually make their way into Bibles as per the biblical canon. Dante Stack clearly isn't going for that here... at least, the whole "formal and serious tone" part. Each chapter regarding the Apocryphal books is helpfully titled with the actual name of the book it discusses, and subtitled by a humorous but accurate summary of the book's contents (or at least what fits into a single sentence). From there, these chapter generally read like episodes of "Apocrypha, the Recap and Discussion Podcast," if such a podcast was a thing that existed. Here's a pair of brief snippets from the start of "Baruch and the letter of Jeremiah", to help you get a taste of Dante's tone in the book:"Baruch isn't just any old guy. He was the scribe of the prophet Jeremiah. Yes, that prophet; the one everyone calls the weeping prophet. I call him the sad sack." [page 70]"Surely, after all those years writing down what sad-sack Jeremy told you [Baruch] to, now that you have your very own scroll, certainly you've got some happy mojo to share amongst friends. Lay it on me. Whaddayagot?'Some of us ate the flesh of their sons and others the flesh of their daughters. (2:3)'Cannibalism? Cannibalism! That's what you're bringing to the table? A literal arm and a leg!" [page 72]For the most part, Dante's tone takes on an informal, familiar kind of voice. The kind that old friends might engage in, a kind of honest conversation tempered with easy, goofy humor that manages to become more and more endearing over time. If someone were to read deeply into it, perhaps they'd draw a connection between this tone of voice and the subject matter of faith, and claim it could be subtle commentary on how close a bond God wants to reciprocate with their children, juxtaposed with the incredibly formal tone other faith-based books generally go with. But I digress.Dante also goes to the effort of performing a lot of research about both the culture of the time, revealing interesting details like why burial in the ground was such a big deal for the Israelites [it involves a little something called a TOWER OF SILENCE, which is where corpses would be placed in rings on the floor and left for birds], and that the Apocryphal books were written at least 100 years after the other books of the Old Testament, among others. Circling back to the Baruch chapter, he even draws attention to details such as the context of when these were written, and the likely reasons why.Fun with the Apocrypha is not a dull read, by any means. It's a must-have addition to any biblical scholar's bookshelf, and one that's also quite easy for non-scholars to pick up. It's been a privilege being able to read and review this book.Score Card:Historicity ~ Dante's efforts to fact-check would make Snopes proud. 5/5Readability ~ It even makes the chapter discussing the proverb stuffed Ecclesiasticus, which in Dante's words is "51 CHAPTERS OF ONE-LINERS...[W]e just get one-liner after one-liner," enjoyable and informative! 5/5Conformity to Orthodoxy ~ Fascinating insights and observations about the Apocrypha and the standard Bible lineup abound. Theologically speaking, unless you are die-hard about your Biblical discussions being pious and humorless, Dante offers little to offend. 4/5Fruit-ility ~ There are more books in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are accepted into orthodox canon. And those books are mostly really great. 5/5Overall Impression-ity ~ I heavily recommend buying this book. I almost had to physically restrain myself from write a 149 page book review discussing how good this was. I'm seriously considering the idea of pitching a book discussion to my pastors. 5/5

The Apocrypha has always been a daunting prospect for me, one of those "I'll get around to reading it one day" texts, though I always feared that when reading it, I wouldn't get much out of it.In this book, Dante takes you through the highs of the Apocrypha, with its best spiritual insights and most entertaining stories, as well as a solid understanding of why these books were deemed unworthy of inclusion into some version of the Bible. The book reads fast and fun, full of pop culture references and silly asides, but you always feel that your hand is being held by a competent and sincere expert on the material--not a novice. It's a great read and a great way to step into the intimidating world of the Apocrypha.
